This involved me performing the story amidst a whole load of machinery at ''[https://museumofbath.org The Museum of Bath at Work]'' on November 16th, 2012. I think the inspiration for Diz was a lovely Tai Chi teacher that we used to have, who taught after hours at our local hospital and who on one occasion - bless him - refused to use a particular room because it used to be a psych ward and "gave off bad vibes". I began to wonder what it would be like if he retrained as an electrician and it all proceeded from there.

This was therefore the first year that I failed to make it into the NFFD anthology. I'm not entirely sure what the inspiration was, although I imagine I started off wondering about clones and conspiracy theories and took it from there.

I entered '''I Think We’re a Clone Now''' for the ''Summer 2017 [https://www.reflex.press/index.html Reflex Fiction] Flash Competition'', where it wasn't quite longlisted, but was liked sufficiently by the judges that they published it on their website on August 16th, 2017 as "one of their favourite non-long-listed stories".

When I gave this story its title, I was completely unaware of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22Weird_Al%22_Yankovic "Weird Al" Yankovic's] "I Think I'm A Clone Now", as featured on his 1988 album [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Even_Worse Even Worse]. This is no longer the case.

I've always been fascinated with [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawnchair_Larry_flight Larry Walters], the guy who strapped a load of balloons to a lawn chair and launched himself into the air, and it seemed an entertaining idea to incorporate this into a nightmare, segueing into a discussion with a psychotherapist with whom the protagonist is obsessed. It scored 85/100, and the judge, Kirsty Stanley, commented that she "loved both sections of this (especially the dream). Could have been 2 successful stories."

Well, I kept it as one story because otherwise I didn't really see how the first part would end or indeed how the second part would get going. After quite a few rejections, it eventually got published by [http://www.ilanotreview.com The Ilanot Review] in their Summer 2013 "Hybrid Writing" edition, entitled ''Sentences''. Always nice to see a piece get a print publication.

It was submitted under the title '''The Joy Inside''' and it scored 87/100. The judge, Kirsty Stanley, commented "Wonderful idea - love it! - and brilliant imagery". She also suggested - correctly - that with magic realism you shouldn't be apologetic, treating what happens as being normal or at least familiar, so I should remove things like "this doesn't strike me as anything unusual".

After making the changes suggested by the judge, I started sending it out. Quite early on, it got shortlisted in the 2012 Bridport Prize, but failed to get anywhere in any other competitions.
