It’s Lit But Is It Funny?

This is a podcast in which we’re going to take a critical look at one of the most neglected genres in literature: the funny book. In each episode I’m going to invite my guest to pick a favourite example – and I’m happy to stretch the definition of funny book as far as anyone wants to take it – and tell me what makes it work for them.

We’ll talk about techniques in comic writing, how comedy is changing, why some stuff dates and other stuff doesn’t and whether humour is even a genre at all. (By the way, I’m kind of hoping it is, because it’s the only one I’m really comfortable working in.) And once we’re done with all that, we’ll talk about their own work as a writer and anything else that comes up.

There’s more stuff about each episode below. In the meantime, have a listen. If you like what you hear, please do go to wherever you get your podcasts from and subscribe. Here are some buttons for a few popular places:

By the way, as a publicity-hungry writer myself, I’m also VERY happy to appear on other people’s podcasts. If you want to hear what I sound like, please take a listen to Polly Hall’s Procrastination Station here.

Finally, if you’d like to buy any of the books featured in the podcast, or books by any of my guests, there’s a link here for that.
