I Suppose We All Thought That, One Way or Another was originally written for Round Three of the 2010 Whittaker Prize. The prompt used was "don't clint to blueprints". It was given a score of 95/100 by the judge, Catherine Edmunds.

Notes

The words in italics are taken from Robert Oppenheimer's remarks describing his reaction to the first atomic bomb test in Los Alamos. The recording of him speaking these words has been used a number of times in other works, most notably the title track of Nitin Sawhney's "Beyond Skin" and the track "Oppenheimer" from Jocelyn Pook's album "Deluge". During a visit to India in 2010, we passed through the Thar Desert where the Indian nuclear tests were carried out. Not that we would have been able to tell if the guidebook hadn't told us, but that trip was almost certainly lurking in my mind when I wrote this.
