Café Doom was a writing forum specifically devoted to horror and speculative fiction. It was run by Ed Dempster and was one of the friendliest places on the net.
Every week there was a Flash Challenge, where the previous week's winner set a prompt word and each entrant had to write a piece of 350 words or less using that prompt. Judging was then done by the entrants. The numbers involved could be tiny, but it was none the less competitive for that. Several of my favourite pieces came out of this.
