Heron Issue 5

Way back in March I had an e-mail from Folded Word, asking me if I’d like to write issue 5 of their occasional broadside Heron. Folded Word are the people who produce PicFic (regular readers may remember this, as well as this) and I like their quirky approach to finding new ways to present fiction and poetry, so I was really pleased to be asked.

Last week I finally submitted my piece to them, entitled “Ultima Thule”, and to my relief they liked it. So watch out for Heron #5, which will fly in some time in October.

In other news, Mrs Darcy is now only three weeks away from publication. Eek. Amusingly, it’s been nominated for the Guardian’s Not the Booker Prize, so if you fancy voting for it (and why not?) here are the instructions. In the meantime, Wickhampedia rolls on, with a short article on Lord Byron. Well, what did you expect?

One More Night of SPARKS

I like being asked to do things. It’s so much more civilised than submitting stuff and then waiting on tenterhooks to find out if anyone likes it. So when Jo Mortimer e-mailed me to see if I fancied taking part in the last night of SPARKS in its present form, I had to say yes. (And take a look at that line-up – impressive, eh?)

I like SPARKS, too. I’ve read there three times in the last year or so, and I’ve always enjoyed it. It’s always fascinating to find out what the photographer has come up with to go with your piece, too.

So if you’re in the Brighton area in the evening of February 1st, do come along to Upstairs at Three and Ten. I’ll be reading my new-ish piece “Ariadne and Her Lover”. The only downside is that having sent this one off to Jo, I realised that it would have been just right to submit to Liars’ League for their February “Cock and Bull” theme. One of my targets for 2011 is to get back into LL, so I may have missed an opportunity there. D’oh.

PicFic Featured Contributor for October

Just realised I forgot to mention this one. This time last week I was very honoured to be invited to be PicFic‘s featured contributor for October. What this means is that I have to write four tweets to be published on successive Thursdays in the month. They can either be individual stories or four episodes of the same story.

I do like being invited to write things – so much less hassle than submitting stuff. But it’s always a bit daunting; somehow you feel the expectations are a bit higher. Anyway, this could be fun. I’ll let you know when each one goes up.

10Flash

It’s nice to submit stuff and be accepted, but it’s even nicer to be invited to submit stuff. And the e-mail that I received from K.C.Ball this morning did just that, for a new site that she’s launching in July, called 10Flash. Looks like a fun concept, and I wish her the very best of luck with it. So I now have a month or two to come up with a story of less than 1000 words involving a librarian on vacation in a foreign land. Now it so happens that I do have an odd library-based story that I never quite managed to get down on paper, so maybe this is the opportunity to have another bash at it.
